Crime is a serious issue in Reading

Reading, Pa is a charted as the fourth worst city in the country for assault crime, for  reason crime has dictated to be just more of an issue it has become a political issue in the United States.

READING, Pennsylvania-  When you live in a big city, there are always issues involving guns, rape, crime and robbery.

Several years ago according to the Reading Eagle  the crime rate dropped significantly 6.5 percent is 2014 according to Reading police. It was the lowest rate of crime the city has seen in 35 years.

A Reading resident Maria Mogford, who also is a English professor at Albright College had seen crime throughout her life living in the city. "It's a disaster from what I saw growing up till now," Mogford stated. Mogford who also has two children that go to schools in Reading, is always aware about their safety ever day when she is at work teaching.

" I worry about my kids everyday because you never know what can happen on these streets. They are very dangerous and not safe for anyone," said Mogford. The city has seen the issue raise since 2014 with its aggravated assaults, other deaths have included gun crimes as well.

Statistics show over the course of the past year that violent crimes like murder, rape and aggravated assaults have rose by 2.8 percent after there was a drop in 2013 by 10.2 percent. With local colleges and high schools the safety for this city is always in jeopardy.

Jake Deitzler who studies criminal justice at Albright College, hopes to buy in as a police officer when he graduates  and help cities like Reading keep the crime rate from not being high. "It hard to see what this city goes through day in and day out," Deitzler stated.

Deitzler through his course studies at Albright thinks the police has not done enough for these violent crimes too be put to a end. " I think the Reading police are not getting the job done.  There needs to be more overtime hours for these officers so they can prevent these incidents from happening," said Deitzler.

With all that being said Dietzler has been attending Albright 2014 of his freshman year. He hasn't seen an issue since attending the school but word will always Reading is the worst city too live in.

"Ever since I attended school here the city has been talked about as a bad city. There are some nice people in this area but other people just like to take it to far and become criminals," said Deitzler.

Reading has been a well known place for a longtime, maybe people just think it's only known for their crimes. A lot of people can be judgmental, but for this city they have been hearing being put down for a long time.

This city has been continues with it's high percentage of crimes committed .  City chief officer Madison Winchester thinks the city will rebound and the police department will be better than ever on keeping this city safe.

"I think our officers here in Reading are the best around Pennsylvania, we as officers do the best job we can too make this city safe as sound," said Winchester.

The city plans on keeping the officers on regular hour patrol until further notice by the department and Chief Winchester. "The officer duty will not change, overtime hours are not prohibited unless if there is a real emergency issue going on," said Winchester.

Reading plans on finding a way too make this city safe again, but right now it is in a bad crisis of crime and a lot of Reading residents are not to happy about that.

  1. Good sources -- does the Reading Eagle also offer reasons for the drop/increase in crime rates? I'm not sure Trump's remarks add much to the piece and the introduction to the source is unclear. I saw many grammar errors including confusion of "to/too" and "it's/its," "are officers" instead of "our officers," and run-on sentences as in your first paragraph. Clarify what you mean by "fourth-worst city in the country." Was the video one you took yourself? Please clarify.
